Daniel Maurer
Bio

Daniel Maurer co-founded Casa Azul Films in 1997 and in 1998 he graduated as director at ÉCAL film school in Lausanne Switzerland. Since then, he worked as an assistant for directors such as Claude Chabrol and Olivier Assayas and was head of post-production or DOP for numerous documentaries and exhibitions. In 2021 he directed the widely awarded documentaries "And outside life goes" on and "The Beyond», with which Daniel won the ‘Best Short Documentary’ category of the 2022 edition of the Prague Film Awards.

Jury Statement

August Sky is a lyrical, beautiful story about where our world is heading. The Amazon fire and the strange, dangerous-looking sky are emblematic of the dangerous world around us. The protagonist Lucia (brilliantly played by Badu Morais) is consciously and subconsciously afraid of giving birth to a child in such a world. She needs support, a community of understanding. The ending of the film is not obvious and makes one think about the film. The director observes Lucia and the world around her with great care and kindness. She tells the story through gestures and non-obvious events. She builds a nice rhythm throughout, which gives the impression that the story flows with the Lucia.
